Mickai Training Academy | Fictional local exercise L1

Linden geography: scale, routes and rainfall

Source and learning task

This is a fictional lesson, not real navigation. No pupil data is needed. Nothing is submitted or stored by this page. The Academy is not accredited. This exercise has no marked result or certificate.

Use the stated scale to calculate both route distances, describe relative position and read rainfall with its units. The source is S1 version 1. Work on paper or in your own local notes before opening the answers.

East increases x and north increases y. One grid unit represents 0.5 kilometres. School is (0,0), Library (2,2), Park (4,2). The river flows west to east along y=1. Bridges are at (0,1) and (4,1). No terrain, travel-time or safety evidence is supplied.

Four instructional figures and their text equivalents

I1: map description

The Library is two grid units east and two north of the School. It is two units west of the Park. Route A goes north two units across the west bridge, then east two units to Library. Route B goes east four units, north two across the east bridge to Park, then west two to Library. The river follows y=1 and flows west to east. The map is schematic; use the declared grid units rather than measuring displayed pixels.

Route lengths in grid units; equivalent data table follows.

I2: route comparison

Route B has twice Route A's grid-unit total. Apply the scale to both values.

Invented April-to-June rainfall totals in millimetres; equivalent data table follows.

I3: rainfall description

May is the highest of the three totals and April the lowest. The series rises from April to May and falls in June. These are invented monthly totals, not a real climate trend.

Four-stage route calculation; ordered text equivalent follows.

I4: calculation method

  1. Read the supplied grid-unit total.
  2. Multiply by 0.5 kilometres per grid unit.
  3. Write the result with kilometre units.
  4. Compare both results and state the source limitation.

Attempt the questions

  1. Calculate Route A and Route B in kilometres, showing the method.
  2. Find the distance difference. Does this establish a real safe or fast route?
  3. Describe the Library's position relative to School and Park.
  4. Find total rainfall and the May-April difference. State units.
  5. Which information must remain when these images are printed in monochrome?

Write or explain your answers before opening the worked guide. No response is sent anywhere.

Worked guide

  1. A=4 × 0.5=2 km; B=8 × 0.5=4 km.
  2. The difference is 2 km. These lengths do not establish travel time or safety.
  3. The Library is two grid units east and two north of School, and two west of Park.
  4. Total=20+35+25=80 mm; May-April=35-20=15 mm.
  5. Keep route names and line patterns, source values, scale, units, relationships and all equivalent descriptions.

Completing this exercise is ungraded practice, not proof of accessibility competence.
